Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.
Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. If you are interested to find out how you can join the Navy you can visit the website here:
There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch.
(If I did this right these should be working Amazon affiliate links to purchase the stuff I like to use. When people purchase from these links it will support Smarter Every Day.)

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. In this case, I had to buy a plane ticket to the Arctic on relatively short notice. If you'd like to become a Patron, I'd greatly appreciate it. The link is here:

I definitely was quite intrigued and educated, but it was alarming the sheer number of white males. I'd have more respect for the armed forces if they weren't literally the same people running over protesters and abducting fairly-elected state governors.

      On the shirt of the girl it says m - i - T: -> E/c^2 = m (Einsteiner) -> sqrt(-1) = i (Comlex Unit) -> pV/nR = T (Ideal Gas Equation)

When I was in junior high one of my teachers was a former Navy guy who had the battle histories of the submarines in WW2. He let me read them...subs have always been a topic of interest and this video was like a gift. Thanks so much for honoring the sailors and sharing your experiences.

    6. light saberAddiCt

The guy that operates the reactor is called a Nuke, which is a very important thing. But there was a saying my dad told me (he was the Fire Capt. at one of the places they train nukes), is "Once a Nuke, Always a Nuke". I guess after all the training they put in it, the Navy doesn't generally like to transfer you to another role.

    7. morry271

I love the way Amercians say submariner, “sub-mar-een-er” ! It’s so cutesy and quaint lol. Over here we pronounce it “sub-mar-in-er”. That doesn’t roll of the tongue quite as easy but it has a classier feel.

    8. Dark Spyro

I am so grateful to be alive today. My girlfriend saved my life last night. This is a selfie I took in the emergency room after having a severe allergic reaction to almonds. I went into anaphylaxis, meaning my face, my lips, my eyes, my tongue, and my throat all started swelling up rapidly, making it almost impossible for me to breathe. I also had a rash all over my entire body, and I was extremely red. Staying alive had never felt more difficult. At one point, my nasal passage was completely blocked, and it was getting more and more difficult to breathe. They shot me up with Benadryl, steroids, they gave me a breathing tube, and even other stuff that I can’t even remember, and it caused all of the swelling and the rash to go away. Because this was a severe allergic reaction, I need to continue taking steroids and Benadryl for the next week, because it is possible that the allergic reactions could come back at any point over the next week. The steroids and Benadryl make me feel like a zombie, and I really want to take care of my health, so this will be my main focus over the next week. I want to thank my amazing girlfriend, who made the decision to take me to the emergency room the second I started feeling itchy. I was hesitant about going, because I didn’t even want to believe this was actually happening. If it weren’t for my girlfriend driving me to the emergency room only minutes after eating the almonds, there is a good chance that I wouldn’t have made it according to the doctor. This has been without a doubt the hardest few days of my life, but I also look at them as the most important few days of my life. These moments have reminded me about what’s really important in life, and it has made me so grateful to even be here on this earth. I will be prioritizing my health over the next week, and I’ll post updates about how I feel. Thank you all for being patient during these difficult times. This week has been NUTS (too soon for jokes? 😅)

26:33 “you don’t suddenly recruit hundreds of submariners” I’m watching this while I’m stuck on a Naval base to go to my submarine school because the Navy recruited hundreds of submariners at the same time 😂😂😂

    23. Steven stott

He knows why women weren't allowed on submarines, and they is a good reason for women not to be on submarines. They weren't stupid in the past, but because of racism were throwing everything under the bus and it's wrong.

    24. Kyosuke

She said Makura? Pardon my Japanese but if that’s not an acronym, then it’s called “pillow.”

    25. michman2

Incredible. Thank you for doing this.

    33. Joan Miriam Hicks

also @21:16 a Red October photograph, a Typhoon-class vessel photo with Sean Connery. What's next Yuri or Premier Alexander Romanov from Command and Conquer Red Alert 2? I don't know if that is respect or not. Maybe K-19, K-431, or USS Scorpion (SSN-589) would have been more fitting.

    34. Joan Miriam Hicks

i don't know that XO sounds kinda SUS ^_^ I know he self reports LMAO! Honestly, Thanks for the video and let us see what service people do every day.

    35. Cear Farseer

I know the military screens for mental issues and such. But, I've got to imagine, these guys must get isolation madness from time to time. Alone under the ocean for extended periods with the same people all the time. They all look like friends so it probably wouldn't be all that bad. But I imagine some people's nerves would be on edge.

    36. deepangshu das

22:08 Dude what's Sean Connery picture doing on the wall ?

Being trapped underwater puts ego in check. These officers are the most humble i've seen as a Marine that has dealt with shitbag O-1 to O-3s

    44. Nonna YoBeesWax

Master Chief, do you mind telling me what you're doing on that ship? 14:49 CDO Arnell Brantley: Sir, finishing this fight.

22 min in: A picture of Sean Connery from the Movie "Hunt for Red October" on the wall :D

    46. Nguyen Nguyen

at 5:40, one of the officers stated, "I intend to stationary dive the ship to 180 feet". This reminds me of the story of how David Marquet turned around the Santa Fe Submarine form the worst to the best submarine by changing the environment.

    47. Claas Deilmann

22:00 i see what that picture did there! ( for anyone that does not understand: look up hunt for red october )

    61. Joshua Top

I've recently discovered your channel and love it; however, I had no idea when I clicked this that it was your content. I'm a former submariner and was trying to find something accurate to send to a friend (we get a lot of questions.) Super stoked to realize that it was you after a minute or two. Great job!

    62. Quaff

Why did he have to explain the presence of a female voice?

    63. pedro hadad

The fact that they show this beast in SEprom easily kinda makes me scared what kind of weapon they hide from the world

    66. AW at sycamore Farm near Sioux Falls, SD

A couple of reasons that most submariner’s will not tell you why they do it one pride there in the most difficult cutting edge part of the fleet, they get more money the most of the sailors and they get the best food and the rest of the fleet.

    67. Robert Gutheridge

They are all very intelligent motivated individuals. From one to another/all who have served. Thank you for your service

The ABCs of Salvation, or how to be right with God, and know you're going to Heaven: A-dmit that you're a sinner, and need a Savior. As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one. Romans 3:10 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 B-elieve that Jesus Christ died paying the penalty for your sins, and rose from the grave. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures... 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 C-all on the Lord Jesus Christ to save you, and trust only in Him for your salvation. If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 The moment you "believe," or, put your trust in what Jesus has done for you, God saves you and your eternal destiny in Heaven is assured. You go from spiritual death to eternal life the moment you believe. Jesus said it this way: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. John 5:24😀

    80. Carlos Leon

      Great video very informative

    81. Brammy007a

Great video..... these guys are a breed apart. I have only 2 questions. 1) I thought a sub was called a boat. When did they start calling it a ship? 2) what kind of complete moron would give this video a thumbs down?

    82. Avril Crisp

Does it do the ice flow and general arctic ice any good popping up and breaking through?

    83. marcuspurciller

      Yooo XO from gardenerville hooyaaaaaa

    84. Behzad Eghtesad

5-6 billions $$$ to building a submarine! To show power = millions of homelessness all across USA! & adding daily... Very fair! Keep going

    85. Cliff P

I loved the cooking video!!! I was thinking about the “kitchen” and how not to burn someone or loose food to it falling on the ground. I know they are notified. But I think a universal magnet system? Could really help? Hang spoons and cooking equipment to the wall and tea pots have it? I am not quite sure on how because aluminum and SS aren’t magnetic. So how about? Putting a layer of steel? In the bottoms of everything that you want to stick to a magnetic. But it would have aluminum on either side? Or? Make an aluminum that has steel? Not quite sure because magnetics can’t heat and cool so the steel in the bottoms of these aluminum cooking and beverage holders. It would help keep the tea cooler longer and help cook the food more evenly. But the best part is how much the government is going to pay me for these ideas!!
