A personal thank you to Air Force MSgt Ryan Crane for nominating me for this flight. Thank you sir.
The Thunderbirds have a SEprom Channel
This flight took place on May 3, 2019 in Biloxi Mississippi. The reason it took so long to release is the high amount of research I wanted to do before releasing the video. I even visited the Air Force Research Lab at Wright Patterson AFB to discuss some aspects of this video with Aerodynamicists. Synchronizing all this footage and coordinating additional B Roll with the Thunderbirds Public Affairs Officer also required a lot of effort.
These are my own thoughts, not those of the U.S. Air Force or the Thunderbirds:
I've been around a lot of pilots and ground crew in my life and I must say that the professionalism displayed by the Thunderbirds was astounding. Their goal is to inspire and demonstrate the capabilities of the US Air Force, so I'll take it a step further. If you're a smart young person who is interesting in changing your life for the better, strongly consider the Air Force. The job market isn't the best at the moment but the Air Force still has opportunities available for you to learn incredible skills even if you're not interested in flying. They manage everything from logistics, electronics, aerospace, cyber and even space systems. The threats to freedom are becoming more complex, and in my experience working for the Department of Defense over a 15 year span (even longer if you count my work as a contractor) The US Air Force consists of some of the most intelligent service members our country has. These people are book-smart, but also have the confidence to solve real world problems with their own hands. If I have a complex aerodynamic question, my first call is usually to someone in the Air Force, because they understand these complex phenomena intuitively. For example, in this video you would hear Flack and I talking about pitot tubes in flight. We also had other discussions about fuel burn rates, Prandtl Glauert, weather.... all kinds of things. Simply put, if you're looking for direction in your life, and you're good with science and math... consider the Air Force. That being said, they also need other types of skills as well. Logisticians, writers, creative people who know how to solve complex problems in unique ways.

This video was the opportunity of a lifetime. When asked if I wanted to fly in an F-16, I said "Yes please, and there are some things I'd like to study. Can we try supersonic flight at different altitudes?" I'm very grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Flack and the rest of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This flight took place on May 3rd, 2019. This Spatial Disorientation training is something all fighter pilots go through so they can understand how their own physiology works under these conditions. Thank you for watching and learning with me. I always wanted to know what happened in the cockpit when a jet goes supersonic. Is it just me or did they teach you how to fly an extremely technical fighter plane while you were in the air??? that's like a surgeon pulling up a wiki how article just before your brain surgery.

    15. Evan Sanchez

I’m getting nervous just watching, not like I’m scared of heights or planes, but I’m scared like I am getting prepared to get in to

    16. Tony Jackson

So what about indicated airspeed vs. ground speed? Because when people talk about Mach 1 and the speed of sound we all know their real fascination is with the highest speed possible which for all intent and purposes is at 68 degrees F @ Sea Level where Mach 1 is 768.611 MPH, aka 667.478 knots. *So the question is....When you hit Mach 1 at 20,000 feet doing 466 knots, was your ground speed roughly 768 mph?*

    17. Fern Parker

This man sounds smarter than me in conversations when he his blacking out, than I do in normal conversation

    18. Daniel Deranger

Why do they go straight up into the air

    19. Shadow Freddy

Actually in seven years when I'm 17 years old I'll join the air force but two things I don't know is if there's like different bases for different vehicles and if you can pick which vehicle you want to use.

Got into a fight and got my head kicked couple of times. Had something like a concussion. Since then I sometimes have this incredibly disgusting feeling at nights / mornings when everything suddenly starts to spin, my eyes twitch, I cant see anything and sweat gets pushed out in like couple of seconds. Then I found a youtube video Epley Maneuver to Treat BPPV Vertigo and using it to fix it. Anyone knows if this has a permanent fix?

    24. Daniel Lacroix

Its all fun and games till you hear "Enemy UAVS inbound"

    29. Melody

Wait so these guys literally exist as propaganda for the military? That's literally it? They don't actually serve the country in any way?

    30. Samrat Mukherjee

2nd time you could do easily plz dont say all these its ok, Super video, respect

    31. Samrat Mukherjee

they do this everyday its normal , I wanna mention you have misjudged yourself a lot its normal , one more thing when you went sonic from outside the sound had come going super sonic

    32. Gojira61

I'm really pleased you're getting a taste of the military. From the submarine to the T-38, and F-16. It is humbling and is a great way to expose the public to the good things of the service and people who serve.

The Blue Angels don’t wear a suit cause when it inflates it bumps the stick And it is dangerous so they don’t wear one and still pull 9G

    62. Gretashatner

Lets be fair, our "highly experience fighter pilots," actually have exactly ZERO experience in dog fights. Further, the Thunderbirds cost the taxpayers $60,000 an hour. Fighter jets are just the only "cool" thing that comes form the military industrial complex. Smarter every day!!

y tf do i actually understand this

    72. Ri My

Destin, I know you maybe regret tapping out, but people who haven't experienced G's don't understand how brutal they are... Especially the first time you get punched in the face by them. My first time hitting >4 G's I thought I was going to die and at 6.7 G's, only 5 mins later, I had enough. I was flying with my Squadron Commander in Pensacola, FL (in fact we were around Dauphin Island as seen in your video here) and I had to tap out before we got to the "fun stuff" so I felt sooooo weak. I definitely didn't recover in a few minutes either. I was a wreck for the rest of the 30 min flight and even through the debrief I felt like I had just done 12 rounds in the boxing ring with someone roughly 6.7 times my weight class. As for your experience, not only was this an incredibly cool opportunity (I as an Air Force Aviator only dream of getting a ride-along with the T-Birds), but you did really freaking well, man. Most people would've been tapping out on that departure alone. Be proud of what you got to do, and how much you withstood... It was WELL above average. Also, thank you for this. I just showed my wife this because you put into a 30 min video a better explanation/representation of this kind of flying better than I could in hours/days of me trying to explain. Love your channel and keep up the great work!!!

    73. John Doe

That image you should of F-86s when talking about the plane the Thunderbirds used were not actually yhe Thunderbirds. Thise F-86s were used by thr Sky Blazers which were the Predeceesors to the Thunderbirds.

    74. Ryan McRoy

      Awesome video

IDK why but i felt claustrophobic when the canapy started to go down and close

    80. Jason Birthman

The reason he tapped out is that he didn't wear the sunglasses.

    81. Joe.C.1971

Wow Destin talk about the opportunity of a life time.!! Those fighter pilots are on another level.!!

    87. PushyPawn

All This MAJORLY Depends on whether you're the pilot/driver or the passenger. Even in a car driving my usual mountain climb and descent I had my brother feeling sick, despite him being a signed driver himself, he was unfamiliar with the course. We switched. I taught him all the target brake & turn points in this climb & descend. I was left feeling just as sick as he was, when he nailed it, on the 2nd try. Conclusion, when you're in control, you have an *UNFAIR* advantage over any passengers you're carrying, no matter the warnings of what's about to come. Period.

    88. StarBlast -

I wonder if the government will one day specifically breed people to be able to do stuff like this better, that sounds terrible but its the government. :/
