Snatch Block! I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video. #1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/ #2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579 #3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. www.kiwico.com/smarter It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

      1. Ben Swanson

Talk to some tree company’s. I know that there are still some around and I work for a company that only used ropes and pulleys this summer and it was really cool. There is a 5-1 so every five feet that was pulled, the out put was one foot.

      2. enzl davaractl

the way you say "snatch block!" reminds me of John Mulaney saying "street smartss!"

      3. Glen Everett

I'm an ex high ropes/zip wire/climbing wall builder and I worked with people of all ages and abilities who wanted to enjoy those activities. The problem of getting a person with a physical disability onto the activity oftern had the worlds simplest answer...... pulleys/snatch blocks/block and tackle. My favourite was connecting someone to a pulley system and a safety rope, hand the pulley rope to a load of kids and shout "RUN!" Needless to say that someone who knew what they were doing was holding the safety rope. I find myself over 15 years after discovering that I broke my back and had arthritis in my spine while in my teens........... I had to say goodbye to my old life as I was in to much pain to indulge the adrenaline junky inside me. Cold turkey sucks, even if it's just natural adrenaline. Last last couple of years have been better since I realised that I'm basically sitting on 2 block and tackles and more single and double pulleys then you could shake a proverbial stick at! I also discoved an extremely reasonably priced supplier of climbing kit (more pulleys and different harnesses that are better on my back) and I'm back to "climbing" trees again and all using the strength of my one decent arm and leg. Coming back down is still the best bit by far!!! Thanks for the awesome video 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍

    15. Sahil Aryal

I am confused why pulleys have to be rotating about their axis. Can there be pulley which does not rotate and the rope just slides through the circumference without rotating the pulley wheel and it provides mechanical advantage?

    16. The PDX Skeptic - Never Stop Learning

I don't know if this has been said. When ever you pull a vehicle, regardless of # of pulleys/snatchblocks, never stand in front of the vehicle, period, ever! That cable breaks and it can harm badly or kill! Snap arrestors don't work! Distance doesn't work (unless you are so far you can't see the vehicle)! Please, in the future, the safest place is in the vehicle being towed or another vehicle with all body parts inside with you!

    17. Gagarin

9:55 I'm probably braking, but why is the tension 4 + 4. Because the tension on the right rope is equal to the tension on the left?

    19. woody4u247

Very good visualization. This is a good generalization of how snatchblocks work without getting complicated. In practical use, there are other things to keep in mind. There will always be a certain amount of Frictional Resistance created from the sheave of the pulley. A snatch block only gets a 2:1 mechanical advantage when it's a straight " out n back" 180° pull ( minus frictional resistance) for every degree of angle wider than 180°. The mechanical advantage decreases until you're no longer adding pulling power, you're simply changing direction. Another key thing to remember is where the load is & how much. Simple numbers Example; use your jeep demonstration...1000lb load to move it.. run a winch cable from jeep to a snatch block anchored safely to a tree or whatever... straight back to your jeep.. yes, 2:1 advantage. Each "leg" only sees about 500lbs of load.. but the snatch block still sees the entire full load of both "legs" of the pull.. so it's critical to make sure the snatch block is rated for the entire load, not the reduced load you think you're pulling. There's so much more to using them safely, but gotta learn the basics first. Well done sir :)

its leverage with rope, you gain force by reducing the distance the object move on.

With the multiplication of force at the other end of the rope. What happens to the tensile strength of the rope itself? 2 pound input, 4 pullies, 8 pounds output. If you surpass the ropes strength will it become immediately noticeable or do the pullies increase the strength somehow? Seems like it would be easy to overload a rope/cable and create a dangerous situation very quickly. Some kind of math and physics is needed but im not that smart lol.

If you use a 4 part pulley, for every foot you pull it moves whatever is being moved 3 inches. 4 parts times 3 inches equals 1 foot. I used to work on towboats in the maritime industry and for instance we were breasting up two barges one night and we needed 1 barge to go forward about 3 inches but we had 4 parts of a towing wire. I told the captain we need to shove ahead 3 inches so the deckhand fed out 3 inches of slack and it barely moved. I told him we had 4 parts of cable that needed 3 inches of slack. Lots of people you'd think should know this stuff, don't

you can simply double the force of the 'snatch block' by putting two reels into the pulley, so with two of them you'll be able to enforce by eight times the original strenght

t's elementary. An increase in strength is a loss of distance. A = Fs. To lift a load 1 foot high, the rope will go through blocks 2 or 3 feet long, but it will be 2 or 3 times easier to lift the load.

    78. RamOn Coding

My robotics team uses something like this to extend linear slides. They translate the spooling of a string into extention. As the string is wound up, the rope in the slides becomes shorter and the slide extends. These slides typically have multiple stages, and they move one at a time unless they are extremely well lubricated.

It's interesting to note that the "work" you do to lift the cinderblocks (in the physics sense) does not change with the use of one, or more, pulleys. Work is force times distance (w = f * d). Each pulley reduces the force by 1/2 but you have to pull twice as much rope to move the block the same distance. So the work was initially f * d, but with the pulley it is 1/2 f * 2 d which is still f * d. I expect Archimedes pulled a lot of rope to lift the war ship. :-)

Thanks for the post. Always wondered, but still don’t get it. There is still the same gravity working on the same weight. I get how one pully uses gravity to your advantage, but how does multiple direction of rope change the fact that X lbs of weight still need X lbs of effort... what am I missing?

    100. ВадиМИР Мухамбет

Произведение силы на расстояние будет одним и тем же - золотое правило механики: выигрываешь в силе, проигрываешь в расстоянии и обратно.
